This simple bird house shouldn't take long to make.You should be able to build this house in an afternoon or evening. First cut out six pieces. Drill an entry hole. Make sure to drill holes in the bottom piece for drainage and also on the sides for ventilation. Attach the roof with a hinge or another idea would be is to attach a leather strapping instead of a hinge. The size of the house will determine what kind of birds it will attract. For Wrens,Nuthatches,titmice,and Chickadees make the floor dimensions 4 inches by 4 inches. For Tree swallows and Bluebirds increase floor to 5 inches by 5 inches,and for woodpeckers and flycatchers increase it to 6 inches by 6 inches. One neat idea is if you are hoping to attract chickdees fill the house with wood shavings. Chickadees make their nests by digging them out. There is no need to include a perch for your bird house. Birds do not need them and they may make it easier for predators to get to the eggs and nestlings. These are some dimensions for a House Sparrow bird house. The entrance hole diameter should be 1 and a half inches. The inside floor area should be 4 inches by 4 inches. The height of the wall panels should be 10 inches.
